The Graduate Program
Columbia has been one of the most important centers of graduate education in history since modern Ph.D. programs began in America over a century ago. Our Department has a strongly international character, and our faculty and students are diverse in interests, origins, and intellectual orientations.

The History Department currently offers two graduate degrees: a Ph.D. program in which the M.A. and M.Phil. degrees are earned sequentially; and two M.A. programs associated with the department which are administered independently.

Our Ph.D. program produces innovative and rigorous research, and it is considered one of the best in the world. Its graduates hold distinguished positions in major universities across the United States and abroad, as well as in archives, libraries and research centers. We also train doctoral students in Sociomedical Sciences in collaboration with the Mailman School of Public Health.

The first of the M.A. programs is a dual MA/MSc degree in International and Global History, offered in partnership with the London School of Economics. The second is an M.A. in History and Literature, which is administered independently of the Department and is based at Reid Hall, Columbia's campus in Paris.

View the Frequently Asked Questions page for additional information about the graduate program.

Fordham University

Whether they are working toward the M.A. or the Ph.D., whether they are studying full-time or part-time, whether they are fresh out of college or are returning to study after a hiatus, graduate students at Fordham have the opportunity to work with its outstanding History faculty. Fordham History professors are committed to excellence in both research and teaching. One of the advantages of Fordham is that classes are relatively small, averaging nine or ten students. Beyond the classroom, students can expect personal attention from their professors and early help in their professional development. The primary function of the graduate program is to develop skills in critical analysis and historical research, but the department also attends to other aspects of professional training. For example, the course on college teaching trains Ph.D. students in pedagogical methods and gives them initial exposure to classroom teaching; a faculty member then mentors those students who are awarded teaching fellowships after this class. Because of their wide experience in teaching, research and such historical activities as documentary editing, oral history, and archival description, Fordham professors can assist students in developing their skills – whether they aspire to college teaching positions, high school posts, careers as documentary editors, jobs as journalists, or other history-related professions.

Opportunities to gain teaching experience are available both through teaching fellowships awarded through the department and in the many adjunct positions offered at New York area colleges. We also encourage students to offer papers at scholarly conferences and then guide them through the process; partial funding for travel to such conferences is offered through the Graduate Student Association. Similar encouragement and guidance is extended to students who wish to secure outside fellowships and grants to fund research and the final stages of dissertation writing. Within the department, students organize themselves in reading groups to further develop their skills in foreign languages. Excellence is also encouraged with the awarding of annual prizes, such as the Loomie Prize for the best seminar research paper. At the conclusion of the degree program, faculty members, as well as the university Career Planning Service, will guide students on how to set up a dossier and look for a job related to the degree they obtained.

The Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History is Dr. Nancy Curtin. Please send any questions, comments, and news to her at [email protected].

The Department of History offers master’s and doctoral programs in national, comparative, and transnational fields, including the history of Africa, African diaspora, Atlantic world, East Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia, and United States. There are joint Ph.D. programs in French History, through the Institute of French Studies; in Hebrew and Judaic studies and History, through the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies; and in History and Middle Eastern studies, with the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. Students may choose to emphasize comparative or thematic approaches, either within their areas of specialization or as a second field.

The faculty is large, diverse, and distinguished. Their interests cover the spectrum of historical research, and no methodological or historiographical approach is favored or excluded. Though the graduate programs are built around colloquia and seminars within the department, they often include distinguished faculty from

Hunter College

Graduate Program

THE DEPARTMENT
The Hunter College History Department offers graduate study in a wide variety of fields and related areas of professional preparation. A favorable faculty-student ratio provides a congenial intellectual climate, encouraging individually designed programs within a coherent curricular framework. The department makes special efforts to encourage women and members of minority groups to undertake graduate study.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Prospective students must apply to the Office of Graduate Admissions, room 203, North Building, Hunter College, 695 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065. They must fill out the required forms as well as provide a transcript of previous academic work and two letters of recommendation. In general, the History Department requires 18 undergraduate credits in history as a minimum for admission to the master's program.

The Graduate Record Examination is required for matriculation. However, while matriculation is pending they can take as many as 9 credits of graduate courses (which, if grades of B or beter are received, can later be transferred) as non-matriculants.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE
Once matriculated, students have four years in which to finish the work for the master's degree. They must complete an approved program of study totalling 30 credits, including at least 6 credits in a field of history other than their field of concentration; and a thesis seminar. Students are allowed to take a maximum of 9 credits of graduate courses in other departments or colleges, provided they have the approval of the graduate advisor. Students may not take more than two tutorials.

In addition to course and seminar work, students are required to pass a written examination in any language approved by the graduate advisor. They must also pass a written comprehensive examination in one field of history. Students may take the comprehensive examination a maximum of three times.

History Comprehensive examinations will be given on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 10am . Language examinations for students in Arts&Science will be given on the same day at 2p.m. Rooms TBA. N.B. You must maintain matriculation during a term in which you take an examination or complete your degree.

After completion of all other requirements, students must present a satisfactory master's essay, or thesis, written under the supervision of a member of the history faculty and a second reader.

Students wishing to take a leave of absence must obtain approval of the graduate advisor and must maintain matriculation in order to take examinations or complete their thesis.

TUITION
As a tax-supported institution, Hunter can keep its fees relatively low. Tuition is $185 per credit for New York State residents, and $320 per credit for out-of-state students. There is a $7.85 student activity fee each semester. (All fees are subject to change without prior notice.)

FINANCIAL AID
Students planning to carry a full-time credit load (at least 12 credits) can apply for full or partial tuition waivers, scholarships, fellowships, and work-study programs. All qualified students can apply for federal loans to cover tuition and other expenses, and New York State residents can apply for aid through the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office, Hunter College, 695 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065 or call (212) 772-4820.

INQUIRIES
For more information contact: Prof. Jonathan Rosenberg, Graduate Advisor, Department of History, Hunter College, 695 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065; (212) 772-5546 or email [email protected].

Future Graduate Students

The Penn State Department of Geography is consistently ranked as one of the top departments of geography in the United States. In 1982, the National Research Council (NRC) ranked Penn State as the number-two department. In 1995, Penn State received the number one ranking from the NRC. In 2010, Penn State Geography remains among the top programs in the United States.

Our graduate program in Geography focuses on specialization and independent scholarship built upon a foundation of broad geographic knowledge and training. A wide selection of graduate seminars and advanced undergraduate courses provide Ph.D. and M.S. students with the base of knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their own research in conjunction with a faculty advisor and advisory committee. Our Master of Geographic Information Systems degree program allow students across the globe access to the expert training of our faculty and staff through the World Wide Web. For more specific information, see the graduate degrees we offer.

Applications for entry in 2013–2014 are due by December 15, 2012. For required materials and other pertinent information, see the instructions for how to apply.

Students in our master's program are funded for two years, and funding in the Ph.D. program is no more than four years. For more information, read about our funding for future graduate students.

Students of all career paths and interests graduate from our programs well equipped to excel in their respective geographic fields. Graduates from our program work as faculty members and administrators at top universities across the nation and around the world, hold important positions in federal, state, and local governments, and work in exciting careers in the business and not-for-profit sectors.

Master of Geographic Information Systems
Master of Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) Program Office

The MGIS degree program is designed for experienced practitioners who aspire to leadership in the geographic information systems profession, but who are only able to study part-time and at a distance.

Students earn the MGIS degree by completing at least 35 credits worth of course work, including:

1.Either the Penn State Postbaccalaureate Certificate Program in GIS (11 credits) or GeoIntel Graduate Certificate (13 credits), plus
2.A minimum of six 500-level or above graduate courses, including 583, 584, and 586, and

3.An individual project that culminates with a formal oral presentation at a professional conference
All courses are intensively instructor-led. Students are expected to devote approximately eight to twelve hours of effort per week. All courses are offered during compressed ten-week terms. Although assignments are due weekly, students are free to study at their convenience. You can earn the MGIS degree in as little as three years by completing one course at a time.

Admission to the Penn State MGIS Program is highly competitive; we routinely have far more qualified applicants than we can accept given the limited number of new students we can add each year. Applicants who have demonstrated their readiness for online graduate study in the GIS or GeoIntel certificate programs are preferred.

The MGIS Degree section of the Web site will inform you about the admissions criteria and application procedures specific to the MGIS degree, the curriculum, the course calendar to see what course is offered in which term, how to register for a course, and the frequently asked questions for both the GIS certificate and MGIS degree programs. There are also links to the student handbook and to resources for MGIS students.

The Online Geospatial Education section will cover information that is relevant to all three programs: GIS certificate, MGIS degree, and GeoIntel certificate including contact information, our faculty, our alumni, and our advisory board.

You can also head to the World Campus, our delivery unit, for more information
